The Yoruba movie industry has gave birth to many movie stars who have carved niches for themselves in the industry. Apart from acting, they also have other businesses which are very much functioning. But after a few years of reigning, many of them have gone off the scene and their whereabouts is unknown to many of their fans. Though, some of them surfaced recently to play one or two scenes in recent movies but they have indeed relegated themselves from acting. BISI IBIDAPO OBE:
Bisi Ibiodapo-Obe is one of the most beautiful faces that have graced the movie screens in the Yoruba genre of Nollywood. She became popular after her substantial role in the yesteryear movie titled, Bisi Omologblogba. Though, she has always been in the news especially when a paternity mess trailed her baby for Dino Melaye. Another one was when she floated sex toy shop in Magodo Lagos. But her face has been off the screen for many years.
Popular Yoruba actress Folashade Omoniyi a.k.a. Lepa Shandy has always been in the frontline in the Yoruba movie industry. In 2005/2006, she was one of the top actresses but when her marriage with Kazeem broke in 2010, she has since gone on a low key. In 2011, she got married to another man and she relocated abroad where she had delivered 2 kids in just 2 years. She has since been off the scene.
Do you remember that well-built, popular and talented actor who is known for his mastery of the roles of herbalist and armed robber in most Yoruba movies? Sikiru Adeshina a.k.a Arakangudu is a versatile and handsome actor who is very good at what he does. Arakangudu needs no further introduction; he has proven this in his many movie productions. For sometimes now, the baritone-voiced actor has gone underground and his whereabouts unknown to many.
For big Abass, he is known for his herbalist role in the Yoruba movie industry. The veteran actor has trained a lot of wave making actors and actresses in the industry including Murphy Afolabi, Lala and the rest. Close to 3 years now, the man of much integrity has been off the scene and his whereabouts is unknown.
Early years of 2000, Lola Alao produced a movie titled Ale Ariwo which had part 1 to 3. The movie made her a force to reckon with and she has since been on top of the game. At a point, nothing much was heard from her stable until when she was in the news after she got married abroad, then, she came to Nigeria to release her movie titled Oko Nene and she went low immediately.
For Lola Magret, her absent in the movie scene was a personal decision she made to try another vocation since acting seemed not to pay her bill anymore. But going by one of her previous interviews, she said she will quit acting anytime she finds a true love, this may also be the reason behind her absent.
In Nigeria, Bukky Black has so many things working for her wrongly. One was a show of shame at the Lagos Television (LTV) premises in 2010 when the popular actress was stripped naked during a fight between factions of the Association of Nigerian Theatre Practitioners, ANTP. Another one was when a murder case of a man, who was known to be “Omonile” in Ikorodu, who was allegedly her concubine was killed in her Ikorodu house. After she came out of the case, she moved herself to Germany to become a hairdresser.
Opeyemi Ayeola is one the Nigerian Actresses who have made name in the Industry. Several years after her marriage, popular Yoruba actress, Ope Aiyeola, who was known for her regular appearances in home videos, relocated to the United Kingdom with her husband and she has since not been acting until last year when she came to the country to produce 2 movies. Mosun Filani was one of the leading Yoruba actresses rocking the industry but 2 years ago, she got married and within the 2 years, she was put to bed to 2 kids. Mosun is presently on marital leave from the screen.
Before the emerged of Odunlade Adekola and Femi Adebayo, Saidi Balogun and Muyiwa Ademola were known to be the best and leading Yoruba actors who movie producers and directors cannot toy with. The Oyo State-born actor is known for Angels Forever (2006), Angels Forever 2 (2006) and Òfin mósè (2006). The estranged husband of Fathia Balogun produced a movie titled Eti Keta but due to the piracy, he alleged to have ran into debt which made him to be off the scene. Since then, he only released a movie in 2 years while he plays minor roles in his colleagues’ productions.
Popular Yoruba actress, Biola Adebayo aka Biola Eyin Oka was popular in 2006, but after a while nothing was coming from her stable until when she got engaged 2 years ago. Late last year, her 2-years romance to a London-based lover has packed up for undisclosed reasons. She was engaged in 2012 with the said lover; and they were supposed to be married in 2013 but this couldn’t happen. However, the relationship we learnt has crumbled. Biola is presently off the scene with no intention of coming back.
Most fans of Rasaq Ajao popularly known as Ara Osan or Pefun Ele in movies will keep wondering why he just disappeared from the scene. In fact, many may not know that the actor has since 2002 relocated to the United States of America where he works as a nurse, and this has taken much more of his time. Though, he still appears once in a while at Yoruba movie location in America but not as before.
Kayode Akinbayo is one the fine boy actors who rocked the movie scene together with the likes Damola Olatunji, Bigval and the rest of them. A Few years ago, the actor got married to a USA based lover and he has also gone off the scene.
Veteran Yoruba actor, Jiumoh Aliu is one of the pioneers of the Nigerian movie industry. He was once the president of the breakaway factor of the Association of Nigerian Theatre Arts Practitioners (ANTP). He was known for his villain role. His last movie was Fopomoyo which featured King Sunny Ade. For a very long time, he has been off the scene, after he relocated himself to Ado Ekiti where he now works as a full time “Babalawo” (Herbalist).
Yoruba Actress Cum-Producer Funmi Lawal is a popular name in the industry until when she got married to Ayo Biobaku and the marriage was later reported crumbled. She and her estranged husband parted ways amicably. A few months back following irreconcilable differences they had, Funmi is no longer appearing on movie scenes due to the reason best known to her.
A few months ago, Bimbo Akinsanya got engaged and had her family introduction ceremony. The pretty actress had her traditional wedding ceremony following Saturday in her family home in Lagos, and she has since gone off the scene. Though, before that time, her face has not been regular on screen.
Ayodele Badmus was reported to be planning to quit bachelorhood which later hit a brick-wall in 2011. The Ibadan, Oyo State born role interpreter and his nurse lover, Temilade Balogun are said to be in a bitter feud as at then. That was the last thing heard from his stable before he went solo since 2011. Though, we learnt she is presently in the USA but he hasn’t been featuring since then.
YEMI MY LOVER:
Yemi My Lover was reigning in the 1990s/early 2000 especially when the part 2 of Yemi My Lover, the continuation of a classic Yoruba movie by Yemi Ayebo that was really popular when it came out in the early 90s. The movie tells a story of Yemi, a young man who fell in love with a mermaid. The memories of watching the movie still remain in the heart of most that had the opportunity to see it then. Right now, he is nowhere to be found in the industry. He recently produced a movie titled Iskilu.
Rotimi Makinde has carved a niche for himself in the Yoruba movie sector. He became popular in the 80s and he maintained the status. Thereafter, he delved into politics and he became a member of House of Representatives in 2011 after he was elected to represent his Ife constituency. In 2015, he was denied the second term ticket. He is no longer acting.
Sunday Omobolanle is the father of Sunkanmi Omobolanle and the husband of Peju Ogunmola. He became popular with his role in the yesteryears TV weekly series. He is known as Aluwe in the industry. A popular comedian. In the recent time, he has been off the scene; he only features in a little bit of today’s weekly programmes. What he does right now is to anchor Nigerian Lotto programme.
Ranti Agbaminoja nee Jacobs popularly known as Ranti Alore L’America is the United States of America (USA) based big babe who has hands in several aspects of the showbiz industry reflecting the culture of Yoruba people of Nigeria. The light complexioned soft spoken nursing mother who several months ago delivered of a bundle of joy named Iretiopin literarily meaning “My Hope was not lost”. Ranti Alore L’America who over the years became a household name among Yoruba speaking movie lovers in USA has not been acting for a very long time. She recently floated weekly radio programme which got the attention of thousands of Yoruba listeners in Nigeria and abroad. Not resting on her oars, the respected spiritualist and counselor has floated a radio station called Imoran Radio in Atlanta, Georgia, USA.
Mistura Asunramu Alao as you read this has relocated to the United State of America. The Olabisi Onabanjo University graduate relocated after she terminated her appointment with the Lagos State Internal Revenue Service (LIRS), where unknown to many she had worked for several years. We gathered that the talented actress first travelled to U.S early last year to visit her sister who is based there, and later made up her mind to move there permanently. Though, her face appeared in some recent movies, but she gone off the scene since.
Talented Yoruba movie actress cum producer Memunat Yunusa popularly known as Mimiano was rocking the scene about 2 years ago but in 2013, she survived close encounter with death in a serious road accident in Oyo town, Oyo State. Mimiano was involved in a serious car accident on Wednesday 20th, November, 2013 on her way to a movie location in the said town. According to the report; the actress experienced break failure in her newly bought Honda CRV before she ran into a building and hit the car on the compound’s fence. Her legs were affected and she has since not been regular in the industry until recently when she featured in a movie titled Omoge Logbalogba.
